A: From start to finish, the NIMS/ICS Pro Edition was designed to be different from any other video training program on the market. The following list shows just some of the ways that the NIMS/ICS Pro Edition is unique.
A: Interviews were conducted with the following groups in order to provide a variety of experiences and perspectives. To see a complete list of those interviewed, click here.
A: The NIMS/ICS Pro Edition DVD training series is developed to address multiple perspectives. We actively sought out law enforcement, fire rescue, municipal, state and federal perspectives to ensure that as many types of organizations were represented. While most of the agencies were directly involved in emergency services, there are strong applications for business, education and industry. The Incident Command System under NIMS is simply a management system that has wide use in everything from event planning to emergency operations. (We even know of people who utilized it to plan their wedding.)
Q: How can the NIMS/ICS Pro Edition save us money?
A: While this DVD training program is a one time cost that is inexpensive compared to other programs of similar length, the true cost savings are related to the overall costs of training personnel. When you consider the costs of sending personnel to a class, covering their duties, travel and food expenses, and the cost of training materials & instructor time, the cost savings become apparent.
We feel strongly that this program should be associated with class room instruction and drills initially. However as time passes, the NIMS/ICS Pro Edition DVD can be utilized very effectively on its own for continuing education needs.
A: The Incident Command System (ICS) has been in existence since 1980, thus there are a number of training documents and classes available. As a majority of students are visual learners, the NIMS/ICS Pro Edition was developed to address the needs of these students by showing them the Incident Command System in use, and by reinforcing the course material through compelling interviews with top emergency management officials. Additionally, the program provides consistent unbiased training that is effective not only for initial training but also highly useful for continuing education programs.
A: At this time we have chosen not to produce a workbook to accompany this program, as there are many free resources available. However, if we receive enough requests, we may chose to develop one at a later date.
A: No, the NIMS certification program is currently conducted by FEMA. The NIMS/ICS Pro Edition was developed as a supplemental training program to correct ICS training deficiencies, improve retention, and provide an educational format for the 80% of the students who are visual learners. Certification through FEMA is easy with either on line registration and testing or by having your students take the quiz and sending it to FEMA. A: The NIMS/ICS Pro Edition is broken down as follows:
A: In order to be effective, It is essential that students stay engaged and interested when video training programs are utilized. Recognizing this, we sought to interview some of the top professionals in emergency management. Many of these professionals command immediate credibility and respect by virtue of their experiences on some of the most significant events of our time. Others provide insight based on their specialized knowledge of the NIMS/ICS system or because students can relate to their position.
A: HSPD-5 stands for Homeland Security Presidential Directive number 5. This directive is a result of findings from the 911 commission concerning the need to have all emergency response personnel in the United States working under the same rules or standards with similar training. While this directive only applies to federal agencies and those who receive federal funds, it is the way most emergency organizations will be working together both today and into the future, thus it really applies to anyone involved with emergency services.
A: Homeland Security Presidential Directive 5 (HSPD-5) requires that all agencies receiving federal monies must adopt the National Incident Management System (NIMS). While this can be accomplished in many ways, the NIMS/ICS Pro Edition provides a cost effective means of providing consistent and compelling instruction for ICS-100 & ICS-200 under the DHS and NWCG guidelines.
A: The dvd was designed to cover the ICS-100 & 200 levels under the “As taught by DHS” guidelines. This is also the same material covered under the NWCG I-100 & I-200 level courses. While the program contains I-300 and some S-400 level materials, these programs require class room instruction and thus it was not possible to achieve a complete program based on these guidelines.
A: Documentary style refers to a film making practice of attempting to document reality. While many training programs are heavily scripted and staged, we chose to conduct interviews never knowing what answers we would receive. We also chose to shoot on locations of emergencies and exercises without any expectation on what we would see. This was done to provide a level of reality and credibility that is seldom found with training films.
